In a speech I recently gave to the Madison Chapter of the Women’s Council of Realtors, I talked about how we can get out of our own way by using Native American medicine symbols. Here are some examples of how this traditional medicine can translate into today’s living.

Sacred Space is an area in Indian medicine where we are taught about respect and how we honor our space – that is our mind, body and spirit. The importance I want to stress here is the respect we show to others’ valuable space, as well as demanding it for ourselves. We can actually mark our territory by setting boundaries. This is our declaration that we consider our body and our feelings and our possessions sacred and we will not allow others to abuse them. Here’s the key: We set up how others treat us by how we treat ourselves.

To get out of your own way, set your boundaries, don’t allow others to be destructive in your Sacred Space and don’t worry about what others think of you while you honor your space. Self-respect begins with you.

Coral represents nurturing. When you consider nurturing, who do you think about nurturing? And where do you fall on that list? If you are not functioning well yourself, how well can you assist those you want to nurture as you travel your path in life?

One way to nurture yourself is to pay attention to your body. It sends you messages regularly. It gives you feelings and emotions, which are signs that action may be needed to keep you running at your desired performance. If you feel tired, you can put your focus on feeling rested. Perhaps, make time for a nap, go to bed early, eat a healthy snack. Feeling overwhelmed? Take some time for your favorite relaxation activity. Is it a bubble bath? A long hike? Maybe it’s puttering in your garage. These happiness breaks can do wonders to refresh you.

To get out of your own way, you can nurture yourself. Pat attention to your body. Reconnect to your feelings. Your body is always talking to you. Are you listening?

You were created in the spirit of love. Live well. Laugh often. Love much!
