Zeegwung is Ojibwe for Spring! “Walk lightly in the Spring. Mother Earth is pregnant.” Boozhoo! (Greetings!) Today, it is the first day of Zeegwung (Spring)! Here, in the Madison area, we are listening to forecasts of four to six inches of snow when this little event is all said and done. And that is on top of the 92 (or so) inches we have already been blessed with this past winter season. I know! I know! I KNOW! We’ve had it up to here (here = 92 inches) with the white stuff! So, what are we to think about this upcoming snow event? Initially, I got into my head. And in my head, this was a great thing to complain about. And then I started complaining with the people I was coming into contact with! And what the heck did that get me? IT GOT ME ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! As a matter of fact, it did get me something. It got that I-woke-up-to-have-a-bad-day feeling! Eeeek! And I never wake up to own that! Time for a shift. I asked myself how I would feel without those complaints about snow. I had a little talk with myself. I said, “Self, GET OVER IT!” And then I took a nice, long walk. WOW! Have you happened to notice all of the new birds flying around? They sound so happy! Do they know what is coming? From the looks of things, they haven’t a clue! They don’t even know where their next meal is coming from! And worry not. They are singing and dancing and strutting their cool-bird stuff! It’s like they are in their own little world, not knowing what our weatherpersons have warned us about! And they are so much happier for it! You know why? Because they are present with what is going on right now in their uncomplicated little lives. And at this very moment, it is a beautiful, sunny day. Who would you be if you let go of the things you want to complain about? How would it feel to just enjoy what you have moving and shaking in your life at this moment? Spring is my favorite time of year and I am NOT going to let a weather forecast take that away from me. I know I can always find that smile in my odayin (heart) when I think about those birds strutting their cool-bird stuff. What about you? Can you find any complaints to let go? Enjoy the riches of the seasons. Baamaapii (Until later) . . . ~Waabaanangokwe (Morning Star Woman) ~Kim~
